Appelyn, the Traveller

Appelyn is the deity that represents travellers and roads, and is one of the deities associated with horses.

Appelyn is said to protect travellers of all kinds, so long as they do not harm other travellers.

Appelyn’s Blessing

When beginning a journey, one may seek Appelyn’s blessing by placing their hand on a clean, unused horseshoe and speaking (or whispering) the following prayer:

Appelyn pave my road and guide my journey.

Alterations to this prayer are common throughout different regions, but the concept is the same. For example, in Val Des Fluer, a common variant is:

Let there be no wilted petals along my path.

In addition, it is customary to touch a horsehoe upon arriving, and thank Appelyn for safe travels.

If, however, the horsehoe becomes dirty, it means that Appelyn has forsaken you and will never again grant his blessing.

In some situations, this can also lead to Appelyn’s Curse.

Mechanics of Appelyn’s Blessing

A person can be granted Appelyn’s Blessing only when leaving a settlement with a specific destination in mind. When doing so, roll a DC 20 Religion check. The effects last until you reach your destination or change destinations.

Critical Success Once per day whilst not in or near a settlement, when rolling a saving throw or skill check, you can call upon Apellyn’s blessing to reroll, taking the higher result. This is a fortune effect.
Success As critical success, but can only be used once per week.
Failure Nothing happens.
Critical Failure Nothing happens, and attempts for the next month become automatic failures.

Attempts to seek favor from Appelyn (such as retrying for a better result by going back into the settlement and exiting again) are known to always result in a Critical Failure.

Appelyn’s Curse

Those with Appelyn’s Curse can be identified by their permanently dirty feet. No amount of scrubbing seems to remove the dirt from the underside of their feet. Appelyn’s Curse is usually bestowed upon those who take the lives of a stranger with Appelyn’s blessing.

Mechanics of Appelyn’s Curse

Those with Appelyn’s Curse take a -5ft status penalty while travelling long distances (2hrs or more) and can not receive Appelyn’s Blessing. In addition, they take a -1 penalty to all survival checks while travelling. This curse can only be removed by atoning, which is a long and difficult process.
