Nitre and Black Powder

Whilst the refinement of black powder is widespread knowledge throughout the world and black powder in mounted cannons and mining explosives are common, there is no widepread method of creating safe, effective hand-held firearms, though a few have been postulated and even fewer successfully created. There is archeological evidence to suggest that hand-held magical projectiles may have been used by the Ancient Meians, though the inner workings of these extremely rare devices have been lost to the ages.

Nitre on its own is a rare and precious material, worth it’s weight in gold. The industrial export of this chemical is limited to just a few locations with rich enough deposits to be able to consistently source it. Most of the nitre sourced is sold to the military and cannon-ships.
