Souls and Spirits

Most of the living beings that exist on the Material Plane have souls.

Many religions give special significance to the soul and try and cultivate it through faith. It is generally believed that something happens to the soul once it’s host has died, whether it is reincarnated, experiences an afterlife, or is consumed by extra-dimensional forces.

For example, those who follow The Lights believe that by creating a worthy soul can be accomplished by maintaining faith, and that those who cultivate worthy souls are rewarded by their gods with an afterlife.

Arcanists who have studied this topic believe that the entities known as ‘The Lights’ may require certain conditions to be met to be able to gain energy from a soul. When a compatible soul dies and is resurrected, the deceased vaguely recall being cared for in the domains of their patrons.

These Arcanists have also studied the effects of ressurection on incompatible souls, and have found that they experience varied memories. Most do not have memories at all, some describe various images of hell, demons, devils and torture, and a small minority mention recalling life as a young animal. Notably, many druids who have been studied are unable to communicate after being resurrected, often remaining in a catatonic state for the rest of their lives.
